Marking 10 years of touring together across the UK, Europe and North America, Alex Hitchcock’s US-based quintet celebrates genuine exchange between the New York and London jazz scenes. Having continuously looked outside of their homes to make musical connections, all five are prolific improvisers and bandleaders, sharing a specific bond with each other rarely seen in a band at this comparatively early stage of their careers. As frequently heard in the groups of revered elder trailblazers, trumpeter Dave Adewumi (Jason Moran, Mary Halvorson), pianist Lex Korten (Melissa Aldana, Tyshawn Sorey), bassist Mats Sandahl (Terri Lynne Carrington) and drummer JK Kim (Aaron Parks) represent the cutting edge of a new generation of New York creative musicians. Their latest release Letters From Afar, recorded in Brooklyn in 2024, was described by Downbeat as ‘impressive and moving, bristling with virtuosity’ and was an NPR and Stereogum album of the week.
